‘FAKE NEWS FROM NIGERIA’: TRUMP BLASTS CNN OVER COVERAGE OF IRAN-U.S. CEASEFIRE DEAL

U.S. President Donald Trump has accused CNN of نشرing what he described as a false statement attributed to Iran following the recently announced ceasefire.

The controversy comes shortly after Trump confirmed a temporary truce between the United States and Iran, aimed at easing rising tensions in the region.

CNN had reported a statement allegedly issued by Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, claiming that Tehran had secured a “historic victory” and compelled the U.S. to accept a 10-point proposal as part of the ceasefire terms.

Reacting on Truth Social, Trump dismissed the report, insisting it was fabricated.

“The alleged statement put out by CNN World News is a fraud, as CNN well knows,” he wrote.

He further claimed that the report originated from what he described as a “fake news” website based in Nigeria, alleging that CNN picked it up and presented it as credible without proper verification. However, he did not name the outlet or provide evidence to support the claim.

In a separate post, Trump shared what he said was the official Iranian position, attributed to Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and called on CNN to retract its report. He also suggested that authorities were looking into whether the publication of the statement could constitute a legal offence.

Meanwhile, CNN has defended its coverage, stating that its report was based on statements from Iranian officials and multiple state media outlets, including the Tasnim News Agency.

The ceasefire, announced on April 7, 2026, is expected to last for two weeks and includes provisions for coordinated passage through the Strait of Hormuz under Iranian supervision. The agreement followed diplomatic efforts involving Pakistan and is seen as a step toward broader negotiations.

The development highlights ongoing tensions not just between Washington and Tehran, but also between political leaders and major international media organisations over the accuracy and framing of sensitive geopolitical events.
