The Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, has raised concerns over recent political tensions surrounding the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and its renewed call for the resignation of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman.
Moro made the remarks during a televised interview, where he cautioned that ongoing protests and repeated demands for resignation could further heighten political instability in the country.
His comments come amid growing friction between opposition parties and the electoral body, particularly over disputes involving party recognition and internal leadership disagreements within the ADC. These issues have sparked protests and public statements from party members in recent weeks.
According to Moro, while it is not unusual for political parties in Nigeria to express dissatisfaction with electoral processes or officials, constantly pushing for resignations may not be the most effective way to resolve such disputes. He stressed that electoral disagreements are better addressed through legal and institutional channels rather than actions that could escalate tensions.
He also noted the increasing frequency of demonstrations linked to the ADC, pointing out that Nigeria operates a multi-party system with 19 registered political parties all expected to engage within democratic processes.
In his words, recent protests have largely been associated with the ADC, adding that while every party has the right to seek political power, including unseating President Bola Tinubu, such ambitions must be pursued through appropriate democratic means.
Moro’s intervention highlights rising concerns among political stakeholders over the tone and direction of opposition activities, as Nigeria’s political landscape continues to heat up ahead of future electoral contests.
