The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Benjamin Kalu, is increasingly being positioned as a leading contender for the Abia State governorship race in 2027, following growing political pressure and endorsements from stakeholders across the state.

Political leaders from Isiala Ngwa North and South Federal Constituency on Thursday added their voices to calls urging him to contest, describing him as a unifying figure capable of driving development and repositioning the state.
The endorsement came during the inauguration of the Ikeoha Movement and a political declaration by Uzoma Ihuka for a House of Representatives seat under the All Progressives Congress (APC), where party stakeholders also rallied support for Kalu.

Speaking at the event, Kalu expressed confidence in the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, noting that ongoing reforms by the APC-led federal government are strengthening the party and opening up new opportunities across the country, including Abia State.
He also highlighted the need for inclusive governance and stronger community engagement, assuring supporters of his commitment to people-centered leadership if he eventually joins the race.

Responding to mounting calls for him to run for governor, Kalu said he had heard the appeals from different constituencies but would make his final position known at the appropriate time, signaling that consultations are still ongoing.
His growing influence in Abia politics comes amid increasing political competition with Governor Alex Otti, particularly over development strategies and governance direction in the state.

In recent months, Kalu has intensified grassroots engagements across various parts of Abia, strengthening his political base within key blocs as discussions around the 2027 elections begin to gain momentum.
