President Donald Trump has announced an order directing the United States Navy to begin enforcing a naval blockade around the Strait of Hormuz following stalled nuclear negotiations with Iran.
In a series of statements shared on his Truth Social platform, Trump said discussions held in Pakistan with Iranian officials had made progress on several issues, but no agreement was reached regarding Iran’s nuclear programme. He insisted that Iran’s continued position on the matter left the United States with no choice but to escalate pressure.
He stated that the US Navy would immediately begin restricting maritime movement through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes.
US Vice President JD Vance reportedly left the negotiations in Pakistan without a final agreement after weekend talks involving Iranian officials.
The Iranian delegation included senior figures such as Abbas Araghchi and parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. Both sides described the talks as productive but confirmed that key disagreements remained unresolved.
Trump also accused Iran of failing to meet earlier commitments related to maritime security in the region, while suggesting that tensions had already disrupted normal shipping activity through the waterway.
The situation comes amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran following recent military activity in the region, with US forces reportedly conducting operations in and around the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategic maritime corridors, linking major oil-producing regions to global markets.
