2027: INTRA-PARTY CLASHES SET STAGE FOR LAGOS ASSEMBLY RACES

Political activities are intensifying across Lagos State as the 2027 general elections approach, with lawmakers and aspirants already positioning themselves for what is expected to be highly competitive contests, especially within the Lagos State House of Assembly.

While multiple political parties are preparing for the elections, most of the real political battles are emerging within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which currently dominates the Assembly. The opposition Labour Party holds only one seat, representing Amuwo Odofin Constituency 1.

Reports indicate that many sitting lawmakers are facing stronger challenges from within their own party rather than from opposition candidates, turning expected re-election bids into intense intra-party struggles.

In Epe Constituency I, incumbent Abiodun Tobun is facing a strong challenge from former local government chairman Segun Agbaje, who has built a reputation for grassroots engagement and community advocacy. In Epe Constituency II, another closely watched contest is developing between incumbent Ogunkelu (Sketel) and Prince Adeyemi Olumuyiwa Ogunlari, known as “Gentle Giant.”

In Ajeromi-Ifelodun Constituency I, the race is shaping into a three-way contest involving incumbent Lukmon Olumoh, former council chairman Ajifat, and the potential influence of ex-lawmaker Kolawole Taiwo, a seasoned political figure in the area.

Even senior political figures are not insulated from the growing competition. In Agege Constituency I, Speaker of the House Mudashiru Obasa is expected to face a challenge from Agbelebu, while in Lagos Island Constituency I, first-term lawmaker Lara Oyekan-Olumegbon is preparing to contend with multiple aspirants, including Prince Moshood Olawale Eletu.

In Surulere Constituency I, popular Nollywood actor-turned-lawmaker Desmond Elliot is heading into a tough re-election battle, with challengers including Barakat Odunuga-Bakare and Rasaq Ibrahim Olamilekan. Observers say his political future may depend heavily on his performance and grassroots support.

Other constituencies are also witnessing heated contests. In Surulere Constituency II, Barrister Damilola Ayinde Marshal is set to challenge incumbent Mosunmola Sangodara, while in Orile-Agege Constituency II, youth-backed aspirant Azeez Oladapo Yusuf (Nino) is gaining momentum against incumbent Abdulkareem.

In Ibeju-Lekki Constituency II, Comrade Abiodun Yusuf (M.A.Y Jankalawi) is preparing to challenge incumbent Oladele Ajayi, who has focused on infrastructure and empowerment projects during his tenure.

Meanwhile, in Oshodi/Isolo Constituency I, Stephen Ogundipe faces internal political tensions, with possible challengers including Adebanji Atewogboye (Skibanj) and Mayowa Alakija. In Apapa Constituency I, Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda is expected to face Dr. Mike Oladunjoye Egbayelo in another high-profile contest.

Some constituencies, including Eti-Osa Constituencies I and II, as well as Oshodi/Isolo Constituency II and Somolu Constituency I, are currently experiencing relative calm, with incumbents appearing to have smoother paths toward re-election.

Analysts note that APC’s dominance in Lagos State has intensified internal competition, making party primaries more decisive than the general election itself. Performance, grassroots support, and internal party alliances are increasingly becoming key determinants of political survival.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, these intra-party rivalries are expected to intensify further, reshaping political alliances and redefining power structures within Lagos politics.
