The Minister of Power, Bayo Adelabu, is expected to step down from his position in the coming days as he prepares to contest the governorship election in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This was disclosed in a statement by Tunji Bolaji, Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations to the minister, following a meeting between Adelabu and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday.
According to the statement, Adelabu informed the president of his intention to resign and received his approval and blessing to pursue his political ambition.

The minister is expected to formally resign soon, with the timing aimed at ensuring continuity in ongoing reforms within the power sector before his exit.
During the meeting, Adelabu also presented a detailed performance report and outlined key policy documents, including the National Integrated Electricity Policy and its Strategic Implementation Plan, as well as a medium- to long-term resource framework for the sector.

The presidency reportedly commended his efforts in advancing reforms and strengthening the policy foundation of Nigeria’s electricity sector.
Adelabu noted challenges currently affecting power generation, including gas supply constraints, pipeline repairs, and outstanding payments to gas suppliers, while emphasizing the need for stability in the sector.

President Tinubu also reportedly gave his approval for Adelabu’s governorship ambition and praised his contributions since his appointment in August 2023.
Before becoming minister, Adelabu previously served as Deputy Governor of Operations at the Central Bank of Nigeria.
