According to the statement, the nomination is in line with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which allows a governor to appoint a deputy governor when a vacancy occurs.

The position became vacant following the resignation of the former Deputy Governor, Abdussalam Gwarzo, on March 27, 2026.

The governor explained that the decision followed consultations with key political stakeholders across the state.

The statement also described Garo as an experienced political figure with a long record of public service spanning over 20 years.

He previously served as State Organising Secretary of his political party, Special Adviser to the Kano State Government, and elected Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area.

Garo also held the position of Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria in Kano State and later served as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

He was the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress during the 2023 general elections.

The statement added that the nomination is aimed at strengthening governance and improving service delivery in Kano State.
