LAGOS UNVEILS CYBERSECURITY GUIDELINES TO TACKLE RISING DIGITAL THREATS

The Lagos State Government has introduced a new set of cybersecurity guidelines aimed at improving digital safety for businesses, government institutions, and residents across the state.

The initiative was announced by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, who described it as part of efforts to position Lagos as a secure and globally competitive smart city.

Omotoso said the growing shift toward digital systems has created new opportunities for innovation and economic growth, but also increased exposure to cyber threats.

Citing figures from the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), he noted that Nigeria loses over $500 million—about N250 billion—annually to cybercrime, stressing the need for stronger preventive measures.

“The guidelines, which are available online, provide practical and scalable recommendations for small businesses, large organisations, and government agencies,” he said.

He explained that the document is not a regulatory law but a practical guide designed to help individuals and institutions strengthen their cybersecurity practices.

According to him, the goal is to build a safer digital environment that supports innovation, attracts investment, and boosts public trust in digital services.

Omotoso also commended the Lagos State Cybersecurity Advisory Council, led by Professor Fene Osakwe, for its role in developing the framework. He further acknowledged the Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, Tubosun Alake, for his support in driving the initiative.

The state government reiterated its commitment to strengthening digital resilience as Lagos continues its push toward becoming a leading technology-driven economy in Africa.
