A Nigerian man, Mr. Ekpenyong Andrew, has died in Pretoria, South Africa, shortly after his alleged arrest by officers of the Tshwane Metro Police, sparking grief and outrage within the Nigerian community.

The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday, describing the circumstances surrounding his death as disturbing and calling for a full investigation.
According to the union, Andrew, a motor mechanic and father of five, was arrested on Sunday, April 19, in the Booysens area of Pretoria while returning from work.

It was alleged that police officers had earlier visited his residence the same day in search of drugs but reportedly found nothing incriminating.
NUSA stated that Andrew’s partner said he was taken into custody shortly after the encounter, and his body was later discovered at the Pretoria Central Morgue the following day under unclear circumstances.

The organisation said a case has been opened at Hercules SAPS, Pretoria, and an investigating officer has been assigned to look into the matter.
It called for a transparent investigation, including an autopsy report to determine the exact cause of death, and urged authorities to ensure accountability.

NUSA also said it had informed the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria and would continue engaging both Nigerian and South African authorities to seek clarity and justice for the deceased.
The union appealed for calm among Nigerians in South Africa while diplomatic and legal processes continue.
