Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has forwarded the name of Murtala Sule Garo to the State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation as the new deputy governor.
This follows the vacancy created after the former deputy governor, Aminu Gwarzo, resigned on March 27, 2026, after a political fallout with the governor and his subsequent move to another political camp.

Prior to his resignation, the Kano State House of Assembly had already initiated impeachment proceedings against Gwarzo over allegations including gross misconduct, abuse of office, breach of public trust, and financial irregularities. He later stepped down from office amid rising political tensions, with the governor accusing him of attempting to remove him from power.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, the nomination of Garo was described as being in line with constitutional provisions that allow a governor to appoint a deputy where a vacancy exists.
The statement added that the decision followed wide consultations with key political stakeholders in the state, and requested the Assembly’s approval for the nominee.

Murtala Sule Garo, 48, is a seasoned politician with over two decades of experience in both elective and appointed roles. He has previously served as State Organising Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to the Kano State Government, elected Chairman of Kabo Local Government, Chairman of ALGON in Kano, and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. He was also the Deputy Governorship Candidate of the APC in the 2023 general elections.

According to the statement, his nomination is aimed at strengthening governance and ensuring continuity in service delivery across the state.
