The incident occurred near a security checkpoint in the foyer area of the venue, where the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner was taking place on a lower floor. Authorities confirmed that a 31-year-old man, identified as Cole Tomas Allen from California, was arrested at the scene after allegedly opening fire.

Security personnel, including Secret Service and emergency response teams, quickly moved attendees to safety as gunshots were heard, forcing evacuations from the room.

In an interview afterward, Donald Trump said he remained calm during the incident, describing the situation as part of living in “a crazy world.”

Witnesses at the event described scenes of panic as guests took cover under tables, while security agents rushed to secure the area and evacuate key figures, including Trump.

Entertainment performer Oz Pearlman, who was present at the dinner, described the moment as chaotic and surreal, noting that guests were instructed to get low and move away from the main hall as security forces responded.

Despite the incident, Buckingham Palace confirmed that the upcoming US state visit by King Charles III would continue as scheduled, though with minor adjustments to arrangements.

The suspect is expected to face formal charges at a court hearing in Washington DC as investigations continue into the motive behind the shooting.
