Armed bandits on Sunday ambushed a truck carrying female students in Akwando village, Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State, leaving one student dead and several others abducted.
According to a resident, Reuben Buhari, the students were travelling from their village to Kachia town to resume school on Monday when the attack occurred. The assailants reportedly struck less than 10 minutes into the journey, opening fire and forcing the vehicle to stop.
In the chaos, a student identified as Purity Babangida was killed while trying to escape.
Several others were abducted during the напад, including Augustina Muntari (SS2, GSS Gumel), Happy Muntari (JS2, GSS Gumel), Favour Tanimu (JS2, GSS Kachia), Patience Joseph (JS2, GSS Kachia), Peace Irimiya and Bishara Irimiya (both of St. John’s School, Kachia), as well as the driver, Irimiya Galadima, and two adults, Fatu Danladi and Laraba Caleb.
Amid the attack, about 15 students managed to escape by jumping off the truck. They reportedly trekked through the bush for several hours before reaching nearby communities safely.
As of the time of reporting, neither the Kaduna State Government nor the police authorities had issued an official statement on the incident.
The attack adds to the growing concerns over insecurity in parts of the state, particularly involving the targeting of students and travellers along rural routes.
