A coalition of ethnic leaders in Adamawa State under the Gongola Peoples umbrella has raised alarm over what it described as attempts by some figures within the All Progressives Congress (APC) to impose a governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 elections.
The group, which represents indigenous ethnic nationalities from the old Gongola region, warned that it would resist any move that undermines internal democracy within the party.
Speaking to journalists, the elders said the alleged plan to handpick a candidate amounted to a betrayal of democratic principles and the will of party members.

“We wish to state unequivocally our firm and uncompromising position against the ongoing sinister attempts by some elements within the APC to impose a preferred candidate on the people of Adamawa State,” the statement read.
The position was contained in a communiqué signed by Markus Gundiri on behalf of the council.
The group accused unnamed political actors within the party of trying to sideline both grassroots members and legitimate aspirants in the selection process.
According to them, any attempt at imposition would amount to “a dangerous slide towards political authoritarianism” and would not be accepted by the people.
“We stand united as ethnic nationalities and declare without hesitation that we will not accept, tolerate, or allow any form of imposition on our people,” the elders stated.

While reaffirming support for the APC at the national level, the group stressed that such support should not be misinterpreted as acceptance of undemocratic practices in state politics.
They insisted that the only acceptable process is a transparent and competitive primary election where all aspirants are given equal opportunity.
“Whoever emerges must do so because party members and delegates have freely chosen him — not because a powerful few have imposed him,” they added.
The elders also warned that forcing a candidate on the party could deepen internal divisions and weaken its chances in the 2027 general elections.
They called on the APC national leadership to urgently intervene and ensure a fair process, cautioning that ignoring their concerns could heighten political tension in the state as the elections approach.
