Ogidi was reportedly apprehended while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition before the fatal incident occurred.
The Delta State Police Command has arrested and transferred an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Nuhu Usman, to Abuja for disciplinary action over the extrajudicial killing of a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.
Ogidi was reportedly apprehended while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition before the fatal incident occurred.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the development, noting that the officer responsible has been moved to the Force Headquarters to face disciplinary proceedings.
“The officer responsible has been transferred to Force Headquarters, Abuja, where he will appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee, currently in session, for immediate disciplinary sanction and prosecution,” he said.
According to the Command, the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, after operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command received credible intelligence from members of the public about the suspect.
Police operatives were subsequently deployed to the scene to take the suspect into custody. However, ASP Nuhu Usman, who led the team, allegedly acted in violation of established police rules.
The statement read, “Police operatives were promptly deployed to the scene to take the suspect into custody. However, the police officer leading the team, ASP Nuhu Usman, in clear violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force, discharged his firearm, leading to the death of the suspect.”
According to the statement, upon receiving the report of the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Delta State immediately ordered the arrest of the officer.
The Command further disclosed that the officer has since been formally queried and subsequently transferred to Abuja for further action.
Reiterating its stance, the Delta State Police Command emphasized its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, condemned the killing in strong terms and extended condolences to the family of the deceased.
He assured the “bereaved family that the Command is fully committed to ensuring that justice is served”.
The police boss also appealed to the public to remain calm, assuring that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure justice is delivered.
Earlier, SaharaReporters reported that an operative of the Nigeria Police Force attached to the Effurum Area Command in Delta State had shot and killed a yet-to-be-identified young man in broad daylight, despite his hands being tied behind his back and his repeated pleas for mercy.
The disturbing incident, which has stirred widespread condemnation, was captured in a video shared by Inside_Delta on Instagram and seen by SaharaReporters.
The footage shows the helpless young man crying and begging the officers to spare his life, promising to cooperate fully and reveal whatever information they required.
In the video, the victim is heard pleading desperately: “Officer, I beg, I will tell you everything. It was my friend that deceived me.”
Despite his pleas, one of the officers shot him in the leg at close range.
The young man, writhing in pain, continued to beg for his life, insisting on his innocence and offering to lead the officers to any location or person who could clarify the situation.
“I will carry you go the place. I don’t know anything concern it,” he cried repeatedly. “Officer, I beg… Officer, please… Officer, I don’t know.”
Eyewitnesses at the scene watched in horror as the officers ignored his cries.
Moments later, he was shot again at close range while still restrained and defenceless, killing him.
