ECONOMIC DIPLOMACY OPENS DOORS: SAUDI ARABIA OFFERS PETROLEUM SCHOLARSHIPS TO NIGERIAN STUDENTS

Nigeria’s Federal Government has praised the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for awarding fully funded scholarships to 50 Nigerian students to study petroleum and mineral-related courses.

The scholarship programme, which focuses on petroleum and solid mineral studies, was announced during a courtesy visit by the Saudi Ambassador to Nigeria, Yousef Bin Mohammed Al-Balawi, to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, in Abuja.

According to an official statement, the Federal Government described the initiative as a major step in strengthening bilateral relations and a strategic investment in Nigeria’s human capital development, especially in key sectors of the economy.

Minister Mohammed Idris said the programme aligns with Nigeria’s efforts to build capacity in critical industries that support economic growth and diversification.

He explained that the scholarship is not a one-off arrangement, noting that it is designed to run annually, allowing 50 Nigerian students to benefit each year.

According to him, this continuity will help create a steady flow of skilled professionals for Nigeria’s petroleum and mining sectors over time.

The Minister also assured that the Federal Government remains committed to strengthening cooperation with Saudi Arabia and ensuring the implementation of existing agreements between both countries, including memoranda of understanding in broadcasting and other sectors.

He further expressed Nigeria’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia amid ongoing tensions in the Gulf region, while calling for peaceful and diplomatic resolutions to international disputes.

In his remarks, Ambassador Al-Balawi said the scholarship was facilitated through the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals and covers tuition, accommodation, travel expenses, and monthly stipends for beneficiaries.

He described the initiative as a reflection of strong diplomatic ties and genuine cooperation between both nations, aimed at empowering Nigerian youths through education and technical training.

The envoy also noted ongoing efforts to deepen economic relations between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, particularly in trade and investment partnerships.
