The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has reportedly endorsed former Rivers State Commissioner for Works, Alabo Dakorinama George Kelly, as his preferred candidate for the 2027 governorship election in the state.

George Kelly, known for his role in overseeing major infrastructure projects during his time in office, is expected to contest under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Political observers believe the move is part of Wike’s broader strategy to maintain strong political influence in Rivers State while serving in the federal government.

Sources familiar with the development revealed that the decision was reached during a closed-door meeting held in Port Harcourt on Monday. The meeting reportedly included notable figures such as former militant leaders Asari Dokubo and Ateke Tom, suggesting efforts to secure both political and grassroots support ahead of the election season.
George Kelly is no stranger to the state’s political scene. He previously contested in the 2022 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primaries, where he finished behind the current governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

His emergence as Wike’s preferred candidate is being interpreted as a sign that the former Rivers governor is seeking a loyal and experienced ally capable of sustaining his political structure in the state.
The development is expected to further shape the political landscape in Rivers State as preparations for the 2027 elections gradually gather momentum.
