A senator representing Kaduna North, Ibrahim Mustapha, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
His defection letter was read on the floor of the Senate on Thursday by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin.

In the letter, Mustapha attributed his decision to ongoing leadership crises within the PDP, stating that he made the move after wide consultations with his constituents and political associates.
He explained that joining the ADC was aimed at furthering his political career and continuing his representation of the people.

The senator also expressed appreciation to the PDP for the platform it provided him to serve, while thanking party members for their support during his time with the party.
The development adds to the increasing wave of defections across Nigeria’s political landscape as parties reposition themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.

Following Mustapha’s defection, the composition of the Senate now stands as follows: APC with 87 seats, ADC with 8, PDP with 3, NDC with 4, while APGA, Accord, and Labour Party each hold one seat.
Three seats remain vacant due to the deaths of Senators Godiya Akwashiki, Barinada Mpigi, and Okey Ezea, while another seat was vacated following the appointment of Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s permanent representative to the United Nations.
