PRESIDENCY MOVES TO SAVE APC FROM PRIMARY CRISIS AS TINUBU REPORTEDLY REJECTS IMPOSITION

Fresh political tension may be brewing within the All Progressives Congress following reports that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep displeasure over allegations of candidate imposition, manipulated primaries, and internal democratic irregularities emerging from several states ahead of the 2027 elections.

Reliable information emerging from the President’s Bourdillon residence in Ikoyi after a late-night meeting with South-West APC leaders reportedly indicates that President Tinubu strongly warned against the abuse of governors’ influence in determining party candidates outside democratic procedures.

According to sources familiar with discussions at the meeting, the President reportedly stated:

“I am a party constitutional democrat. Yes, I gave governors the privilege to coordinate and take charge of party affairs in their respective states, but I did not ask anyone to impose candidates indiscriminately.

“Even where necessary, no one should be a judge in his own case.

“Where free and fair primary elections did not take place, I have directed the National Chairman and National Secretary to do the needful in restoring the integrity of the party.”

The development has already generated serious conversations within APC circles nationwide, particularly in states where complaints of manipulated consensus arrangements and failed direct primaries have intensified in recent days.

Political analysts say the President’s reported intervention reflects growing concern within the APC leadership that unresolved internal disputes could weaken party cohesion ahead of the 2027 general elections.

One of the most controversial cases currently attracting attention is the unfolding crisis surrounding the Kano Central Senatorial primaries in Kano State.

Supporters of leading APC aspirant Dr. Mohammed Musa Zango had accused party authorities of frustrating the conduct of direct primaries scheduled for Monday, May 18, 2026, despite official notices earlier issued by APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka confirming the exercise nationwide.

Videos and eyewitness accounts seen by Headlinenews.news reportedly showed APC members across the 15 Local Government Areas of Kano Central standing for several hours under the scorching Kano sun with their membership cards waiting for accreditation and voting to commence.

Supporters claimed they waited from approximately 8:30 am until late afternoon at ward and local government secretariats without seeing any election official or receiving any formal communication regarding the exercise.

The controversy deepened after reports emerged alleging that members of the APC Election Committee remained inside Government House Kano throughout the day and were unavailable to conduct the primaries.

Despite the non-conduct of the election, a candidate was reportedly later announced through what critics described as an imposed consensus arrangement.

Dr. Zango had earlier publicly dissociated himself from the consensus process, insisting that he neither signed nor endorsed any final affirmation document required under APC guidelines to validate consensus candidature.

Under the Electoral Act and APC internal guidelines, political observers note that consensus arrangements require the voluntary consent and endorsement of all aspirants involved. Failure to obtain such consent raises serious legal and procedural questions regarding legitimacy.

Analysts believe the Kano situation may have become one of the cases prompting concern at the highest levels of the presidency as the party leadership seems to be silent about these irregularities strangely.

For many APC members, President Tinubu’s reported comments reinforce his long-standing image as a politician shaped by political struggle, coalition-building, and internal democratic contestation rather than unilateral imposition.

Observers say the President appears conscious that the APC’s greatest political strength since 2015 has been its ability to accommodate diverse interests through negotiation, competition, and broad-based participation.

Political insiders also warn that attempts to suppress grassroots participation through controversial consensus arrangements may damage party mobilisation in critical states where local loyalty and stakeholder inclusion remain central to electoral success.

In Kano Central, supporters of Dr. Zango argue that his more than two decades of humanitarian activities through the Fatah Zango Foundation — including support for orphans, widows, persons with disabilities, youth empowerment, and vulnerable families — have created substantial grassroots goodwill across the constituency.

Many believe the massive turnout recorded by his supporters, including in political strongholds associated with former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau, demonstrated that humanitarian capital can evolve into significant political capital within grassroots communities.

Political observers warn that ignoring such realities could create avoidable resentment capable of weakening APC unity in Kano ahead of 2027.

A political party derives its true strength not from imposition, intimidation, or manufactured consensus but from the credibility of its internal democratic process.

It is only by promoting transparent democratic norms that a party can build the unity, loyalty, and grassroots legitimacy required to withstand opposition forces.

Governors and party leaders across the federation, analysts argue, must emulate President Tinubu’s stated commitment to constitutional democracy rather than forcing aspirants on party members. Imposition weakens trust, deepens grievances, and ultimately undermines party cohesion.

As internal consultations continue, many party stakeholders are now watching closely to see whether the APC national leadership will order fresh primaries in disputed constituencies as part of broader efforts to restore confidence in the party’s internal democratic process.
