Peter Obi Emerges Sole Presidential Aspirant as NDC Closes 2027 Ticket Sales
Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has emerged as the sole presidential aspirant of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general elections, following the closure of sales for Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for the party’s presidential ticket.
According to party sources, Obi was the only aspirant who purchased the presidential nomination forms before the deadline, effectively making him the lone contender for the party’s top ticket.
The party has, however, extended the deadline for other elective positions by one week to allow more aspirants to complete their applications for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and State House of Assembly seats.
In a statement issued by the National Secretary of the party, Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the new deadline for those categories was moved from Sunday, May 17, 2026, to Sunday, May 24, 2026.

The party clarified that the extension does not apply to the presidential race, as the collection of Expression of Interest forms for that office has officially closed.
The NDC further announced that screening of all aspirants who have purchased nomination forms will begin on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, and end on May 26, 2026.
It added that the collection and submission of completed nomination forms by cleared aspirants will run from May 20 to May 26, 2026.
According to the party, all aspirants must undergo screening and pre-qualification interviews at designated venues nationwide, presenting relevant documents including educational certificates, identification records, and party membership credentials.
The party also stated that each submission must be made in six copies and will be assessed based on competence, character, local considerations, and the preferences of party members at the grassroots level.
The NDC stressed that it will not grant any further extensions and urged all aspirants to strictly adhere to the guidelines and timelines.
It further encouraged consensus-building among aspirants and noted that only those cleared through the screening process would be eligible to proceed with nomination formalities for elective positions.
