A police officer attached to Hotoro Division in Kano, identified as Sani S.O., has been killed after he was reportedly shot while responding to a violent clash involving rival thugs in the area.
According to sources, the officer was part of a team deployed to restore order when fighting broke out between the groups. During the operation, one of the suspects allegedly fired a dane gun, hitting him.
A source who spoke to Daily Trust said the incident happened while officers were trying to disperse the hoodlums.
“He was working at the Hotoro Division and was deployed with others to disperse the thugs. Unknown to him, some of them had a dane gun, which they used to shoot him,” the source said.

He was quickly rushed to hospital after the shooting but was confirmed dead shortly after arrival.
The source also revealed that the late officer had served in the Nigeria Police Force for over 30 years and was just weeks away from retirement.
“He was a good man who served diligently. He was very close to retirement before this tragedy happened,” the source added.
Efforts to get an official reaction from the Kano State Police Command were unsuccessful as the spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, did not respond to calls or messages at the time of filing this report.
Kano has recently seen a rise in violent clashes involving thugs in several communities, including Hotoro, Fagge, Koki, Abattoir area, Kurnar Asabe, and Gyadi-Gyadi, especially as political activity builds ahead of the 2027 elections.
