TRUMP SEEKS REDEMPTION IN CUBA AFTER HIS REGIME-CHANGE FAILURE IN IRAN

President Donald Trump is reportedly intensifying pressure on Cuba in what appears to be a renewed push for major political change in the country, although such efforts carry significant military and political risks for the United States.

The situation escalated after the US Justice Department indicted former Cuban leader Raúl Castro, 94, on charges linked to the 1996 downing of civilian aircraft that killed four people, including three Americans. The indictment was announced on Cuban Independence Day, marking a significant development in long-standing tensions between Washington and Havana.

Alongside the legal action, the US has increased economic pressure on Cuba, including tightened restrictions on oil imports, which Cuban authorities say has worsened an already severe humanitarian crisis. US officials have also reportedly issued additional demands through diplomatic and intelligence channels.

President Trump has recently made strong statements regarding Cuba, claiming he has broad authority to act against the country and suggesting that his administration is working toward what he described as “liberating” Cuba. He has also criticised the Cuban government, describing it as economically and politically failing.

According to reports, the US believes its combination of legal pressure, economic restrictions, and diplomatic measures could weaken Cuba’s leadership and potentially open pathways for political negotiations or internal shifts in power. However, analysts warn that such actions may instead harden resistance within the Cuban government and strengthen its internal cohesion.

Experts have also cautioned that escalating pressure could increase humanitarian suffering and potentially trigger instability, including a possible migration crisis if conditions deteriorate further.

While there are no confirmed signs of major US military buildup near Cuba, reports indicate an increase in US surveillance activity in the region, which has in past cases preceded military interventions in other countries.

The Cuban government has strongly rejected US actions, describing them as political interference and reaffirming its position against external pressure.

Observers note that the Trump administration’s broader foreign policy approach has involved combining economic sanctions with the threat of force in efforts to influence adversarial governments, though outcomes have varied across different regions.

Some analysts argue that the administration is seeking a significant foreign policy success in Cuba, which has long resisted US attempts at regime change since the era of Fidel Castro.

However, critics warn that any direct military intervention would carry high risks, including potential casualties, regional instability, and significant political consequences within the United States.
