APC Declares Eric Opah Winner of Abia Governorship Primary

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has declared businessman Eric Opah as its governorship candidate for the 2027 general elections in Abia State.

The result was announced on Thursday night at the APC secretariat in Umuahia by the Chairman of the Governorship Primary Election Committee and Returning Officer, Bartho Nyelong.

According to the official results, Opah secured 126,977 votes to defeat his closest rival, former Minister of State for Science and Innovation, Henry Ikoh, who polled 5,905 votes.

Nyelong explained that the results were collated from all 17 local government areas after voting was conducted across the state’s 184 wards.

He stated that Opah satisfied all constitutional and electoral requirements of the party and was therefore declared the duly elected governorship candidate of the APC for the 2027 election.

The returning officer described the primary election as peaceful, transparent, and reflective of the party’s democratic process.

He also commended party delegates and supporters for their orderly conduct throughout the exercise, noting that their cooperation contributed to the smooth conduct of the primary.

Following the announcement, Nyelong presented Opah with his Certificate of Return, officially confirming him as the party’s flag bearer.

Reacting to the outcome, the Abia State chapter of the APC congratulated Opah on his emergence and expressed confidence in his ability to challenge the Labour Party-led administration of Governor Alex Otti in the 2027 governorship election.

In a statement signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru, the APC described Opah as an accomplished businessman and experienced leader with the capacity to reposition the state.

The party also urged members and supporters to remain united and committed ahead of the 2027 elections as it works toward reclaiming power in Abia State.
