ATIKU THROWS SHADE AT OBI, SAYS NIGERIA NEEDS A PRESIDENT WHO CAN GOVERN, NOT JUST TREND ONLINE

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has suggested that Nigeria needs an experienced leader capable of governing effectively rather than one driven mainly by online popularity.

Speaking through his media aide, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku stressed that the country’s current economic and security challenges require a tested and capable leader ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

He warned against what he described as political experimentation, saying the nation cannot afford a leadership style based on “learning on the job.”

According to him, winning elections requires more than strong support on social media, adding that governance demands competence, preparation, and practical leadership experience.

Although he did not directly mention anyone, many political observers viewed the statement as an indirect criticism of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, whose popularity among young Nigerians and social media users grew significantly during the 2023 elections.

Obi, who recently left the ADC for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), built a strong support base popularly known as the “Obidient” movement, which gained major visibility across social media platforms.

Atiku said Nigeria is currently facing serious economic hardship, insecurity, rising debt, and weakening institutions, adding that the opposition must present a candidate capable of governing from the first day in office.

Highlighting his own political experience, he pointed to reforms carried out during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, including economic restructuring, privatisation efforts, and policies that contributed to debt relief for Nigeria.

He also urged party delegates to focus on electability, national acceptance, and the ability to unite Nigerians across regions and interests ahead of the 2027 general election.

Atiku concluded by saying the coming election represents a defining moment for the country, insisting that Nigeria needs practical solutions and leadership focused on national recovery.
