A touching moment unfolded at the Vatican on May 27 when Pope Leo XIV personally stepped in to assist a priest who suddenly felt unwell during the end of the General Audience in St. Peter’s Square.
According to Father Franco Semeraro, the Pope immediately left his platform after noticing the situation and went down to help Father Diego Semeraro, a priest from Martina Franca in southern Italy, who had collapsed due to exhaustion and heat after spending hours under the sun.
Witnesses described how Pope Leo XIV knelt beside the priest, checked on him, and offered comfort as security personnel gathered around the scene. The quick response drew widespread attention, with images of the moment circulating globally.
Father Franco explained that his brother had been waiting in line for the customary greeting with the Pope when he suddenly began to feel faint. He later confirmed that Father Diego, who is in his early 80s, is now recovering well after receiving medical attention at the Vatican clinic.
During the interaction, the Pope greeted him warmly, shook his hand, and gave him a rosary as a gesture of support before the priest was taken for medical checks, which reportedly showed no serious issues.
Father Franco, who recently marked 60 years in the priesthood, noted that the moment was especially emotional given the family’s long connection to the Church and previous encounters with papal ceremonies.
Father Diego himself is no stranger to St. Peter’s Square, having been ordained there in 1970 by Pope Paul VI and serving for decades in pastoral ministry in southern Italy.
The incident has since been widely shared as a moment of compassion and quick intervention during a public religious gathering.
