Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has held talks with former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, who is a candidate for the position of United Nations Secretary-General, during a meeting in Beijing.

Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said China would participate in the selection process for the next UN chief in a responsible and constructive manner.
He added that China supports efforts to strengthen the United Nations and ensure it is better equipped to respond to emerging global challenges while maintaining its authority and relevance.

During the meeting, Bachelet described the United Nations as an essential platform for addressing shared global challenges and called for stronger commitment to the UN Charter and coordinated action across peace, development and human rights pillars.
She also expressed appreciation for China’s long-standing support for multilateralism and its role within the UN system, noting her readiness to work with China and other international partners to strengthen the organisation.

Bachelet reaffirmed her commitment to the one-China principle and emphasised the importance of enhancing cooperation to reinforce the UN’s global role.
Wang Yi reiterated China’s position as a strong supporter of the United Nations, saying Beijing remains committed to working with all parties to safeguard and strengthen the organisation.
The meeting highlighted ongoing diplomatic engagement ahead of the selection process for the next UN Secretary-General.
