Reports circulating on social media claim that some Nigerians have openly shared their bank account details with individuals alleged to be bandits during a TikTok live session, with the expectation of receiving part of money linked to ransom payments from kidnappings.
According to a post by business analyst Bolaji Fesomade on X, some users allegedly submitted their account information during a live broadcast where an individual described as a bandit was distributing money online. He claimed the funds were linked to ransom proceeds from kidnapping activities.
Another social media user, identified as Danny of Owerri, supported the claim, stating that participants were informed during the live session that the money being shared originated from ransom payments. Despite this, he alleged that some viewers still went ahead to provide their bank details for payment.
A legal practitioner, Foundational Egi Nupe, also expressed concern over the alleged incident, questioning the behaviour of individuals who reportedly submitted their account information to suspected criminal actors online.
The claims have generated mixed reactions across social media platforms. While some users condemned the alleged actions and called for investigations by security agencies, others argued that economic hardship may be driving desperate behaviour among citizens.
It is also alleged that criminal groups have increasingly used social media platforms such as TikTok to display ransom money and engage with online audiences, though these claims remain unverified.
