A recent viral video showing officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Housing confronting a resident over the installation of solar panels has sparked widespread public outrage and heated debate across the state.
In the footage, members of the ministry’s monitoring and compliance team were seen demanding that the homeowner obtain approval and pay a fee before continuing the solar installation, a move that quickly triggered backlash on social media.
However, the Lagos State Government has clarified that such permits and administrative charges apply only to residents in government-owned social housing estates, not to private homeowners or tenants across the state.
According to the government’s media aide, Wale Ajetunmobi, the resident involved in the video misunderstood the policy, stressing that the rules are meant to regulate structural changes within state-managed housing estates.
He explained that solar installations in those estates are treated as structural modifications, especially when they affect shared spaces, and therefore require official approval from relevant departments before execution.
Officials also noted that the regulation is intended to prevent damage, liability issues, and unauthorized alterations within government-managed properties.
Despite the clarification, the incident has triggered strong reactions among residents, many of whom argue that the policy could discourage renewable energy adoption in a city already struggling with persistent power shortages.
