President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is on course to develop into a modern capital city that reflects Nigeria’s population growth, economic ambitions, and national identity.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to infrastructure-driven development, noting that improved transport networks in Abuja will help reduce logistics costs, attract investment, and create employment opportunities.
The President made this statement on Wednesday in Abuja during the commissioning of the full-scope development of Arterial Road N5 (Obafemi Awolowo Way), which links Life Camp Junction to Ring Road III in the Dape District.
He was represented at the event by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who delivered the President’s message emphasizing the importance of infrastructure as a key indicator of national progress and governance strength.
Tinubu stressed that his administration will continue prioritising strategic infrastructure projects that improve connectivity, stimulate economic activities, and strengthen public trust in government.
He noted that no capital city can effectively support national aspirations if its infrastructure remains weak or neglected, adding that Abuja must evolve into a city worthy of Nigeria’s ambitions.
According to him, the government remains committed to transforming the FCT into a well-planned, functional, and globally competitive capital city.
He also highlighted ongoing efforts to ensure continuity in infrastructure delivery, stating that abandoned projects have been replaced with consistent execution and completion of inherited road developments.
The President explained that the N5 corridor project was conceived, funded, and completed under the current administration after being awarded to Julius Berger with a 15-month completion timeline following its commencement in October 2024.
He said the successful delivery of the project reflects a shift away from prolonged delays and repeated budget cycles that previously slowed infrastructure development.
Tinubu commended the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, for his role in driving infrastructure development across the capital, and also praised the contractor for timely delivery.
He described the completed road as more than just a transport route, noting that it serves as an important economic corridor that will ease traffic congestion and improve productivity.
The President said the corridor will enhance connectivity between key districts including Dape, Karmo, Gwarinpa I, Kado, Idu, and Mbora, while also improving access to the Idu Industrial Area.
He further urged residents and businesses to support infrastructure development by fulfilling tax obligations and protecting public assets from vandalism.
Earlier in her remarks, the Minister of State for FCT, Dr Mariya Mahmud, praised the administration’s commitment to delivering critical infrastructure projects across the territory.
The Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Administration, Engr Richard Yunana Dauda, also noted that the project would significantly improve road connectivity within Abuja and surrounding communities.
The event was attended by lawmakers, senior government officials, and representatives of the FCT administration.
