The United States Men’s National Team began their 2026 FIFA World Cup journey in emphatic fashion with a commanding 4-1 victory over Paraguay at SoFi Stadium.

Backed by a crowd of 70,492 spectators, the Americans produced an impressive display to secure all three points and move to the top of Group D. The four-goal haul also marked the highest number of goals the United States has scored in a World Cup match.
The hosts took an early lead in the seventh minute when a dangerous cut-back from Weston McKennie resulted in an own goal by Paraguay’s Damian Bobadilla.

The United States continued to press forward and extended their advantage before halftime through Folarin Balogun, who netted twice, including a superb curling effort that left the goalkeeper with no chance.
Captain Christian Pulisic was withdrawn at the break as a precaution after experiencing discomfort from a calf issue.
Paraguay managed to reduce the deficit in the 73rd minute when Maurício found the back of the net, but the American defence remained solid throughout the contest.

Defender Chris Richards delivered a standout performance, completing every one of his 83 passes and helping maintain control of the match.
Deep into stoppage time, substitute Giovanni Reyna added the finishing touch with a brilliant strike from the outside of his foot to complete the dominant victory.

The United States controlled 63 percent of possession and registered 16 shots compared to Paraguay’s nine, earning praise for an attacking and disciplined performance.
Attention now turns to their next Group D fixture against Australia in Seattle on June 19, while Paraguay will attempt to bounce back when they face Türkiye in Santa Clara.
