The announcement was confirmed on Monday by a spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya movement, who stated that the selection marks a key step in the party’s preparations for the upcoming polls.

Mustapha Kwankwaso previously served as Kano State Commissioner for Youth and Sports before leaving the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. His departure came amid political realignments involving prominent figures within the state’s political landscape.

The former commissioner is the son of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a leading political figure who has remained influential in Kano politics and national affairs.

His emergence as deputy governorship candidate is expected to strengthen the NDC’s campaign structure in Kano as the party positions itself for the 2027 elections.

Meanwhile, Senator Kwankwaso is currently the vice-presidential candidate of the NDC, running alongside the party’s presidential flagbearer for the 2027 general election.
