De la Espriella, who was endorsed by Donald Trump, has promised a tough military approach against illegal armed groups, drug cartels, and criminal networks.

He appeared to defeat left-wing candidate Iván Cepeda, an ally of outgoing president Gustavo Petro, in a closely contested runoff election.

With more than 99% of votes counted, de la Espriella reportedly secured about 49.7% while Cepeda followed closely with 48.7%. Cepeda has not conceded, arguing that the results are not yet official and should undergo full verification before acceptance.

In his victory remarks, de la Espriella said the outcome marked the beginning of a new political era based on security, opportunity, and national renewal. He also pledged to govern for all citizens regardless of who they voted for and reaffirmed commitment to Colombia’s constitution.

Supporters gathered in several cities, celebrating what they described as a turning point for the country. However, opposition supporters expressed concern over the narrow margin and warned that the deep political divide could worsen tensions.

There were also reports of clashes in Cali, where protests broke out following the announcement, with security forces dispersing crowds using tear gas.

Petro has called for an audit of the electoral system, alleging possible irregularities, though no verified evidence has been presented.

De la Espriella, a lawyer and businessman with no prior political office, has built his campaign around a hardline security agenda. He has pledged to end negotiations with armed groups, strengthen military operations, and expand state control in regions affected by violence and drug trafficking. Colombia continues to face escalating conflict involving armed groups and criminal organizations competing over drug routes and illegal mining.

His victory is being viewed as part of a broader regional shift toward right-leaning leadership focused on security and economic reforms.

International reactions have followed, including praise from leaders such as Javier Milei and José Antonio Kast, while critics warn of potential political unrest and democratic tension.
