GENERAL MOTORS FACING BACKLASH FOR REPLACING OVER 1,000 HUMAN WORKERS WITH 50 ROBOTS AT DETROIT PLANT

General Motors (GM) is facing criticism from labour unions after replacing more than 1,000 workers with 50 robotic units at its Detroit manufacturing plant.

The automaker recently introduced collaborative robots, commonly known as “cobots,” at its Michigan facility. These robots work alongside human employees on the assembly line, assisting with tasks such as attaching vehicle body panels.

According to GM, the move is part of a broader automation strategy aimed at improving efficiency, workplace safety, and long-term competitiveness.

“We’ve been installing cobots across our manufacturing footprint as part of a broader push to bring more advanced technology into our operations,” GM spokesperson Kevin Kelly said.

He added that the robots are being deployed alongside existing workers to improve safety, ergonomics, and operational flexibility.

Labour Unions Push Back

The decision has sparked concerns among labour leaders, who argue that automation is coming at the cost of human jobs.

United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 22 President James Cotton criticized the move, noting that the introduction of robots followed significant workforce reductions.

“It’s always a concern when you see a robot coming to a plant, especially after they have laid off over a thousand people,” Cotton said. “They say it’s the wave of the future, and if that’s so, they’re taking away jobs from people.”

He further expressed frustration over the increasing presence of robotic systems in manufacturing facilities, describing the development as a major concern for union members.

Profit Growth Amid Automation

The controversy comes as GM continues to report strong financial performance. In the first quarter of 2026, the company recorded profits of $4.25 billion, representing a 22% increase compared to the same period in 2025.

The situation has reignited debates about the growing role of automation in modern industries and the balance between technological advancement and job preservation.
