Algeria is reportedly moving closer to a major defense agreement with China that could see the North African nation acquire J-10C multirole fighter jets and KJ-500 airborne early warning and control aircraft.
If the deal is completed, Algeria would become the first African country to operate both Chinese-made platforms, with deliveries expected to begin next year. The move would represent a significant step in the country’s efforts to modernize its military and reduce its reliance on Russian defense equipment.
Although Algeria continues to expand its fleet of Russian aircraft, including advanced fighter and attack jets, the potential Chinese acquisition would provide greater flexibility in sourcing military hardware amid growing challenges affecting Russia’s defense production capacity.
The J-10C is regarded as one of China’s most advanced fourth-generation combat aircraft. Equipped with modern radar systems and long-range missile capabilities, the fighter is designed to carry out a wide range of missions, including air defense, interception, strike operations, and maritime missions.
Beyond strengthening its combat fleet, Algeria is also expected to benefit from the advanced surveillance and command capabilities offered by the KJ-500. The aircraft is designed to coordinate military operations in real time by linking fighter jets, radar systems, air defenses, and command centers.
Military analysts believe the platform could significantly improve Algeria’s ability to monitor its vast southern borders, desert regions, and Mediterranean coastline.
The potential agreement comes as the J-10C continues to attract international attention following reports of strong performances during recent military exercises and operational deployments. These developments have contributed to growing interest in China’s latest generation of combat aircraft and its expanding role in the global defense market.
For Algeria, the deal would not only enhance military capabilities but also support a broader strategy of diversifying defense partnerships while maintaining greater independence in military procurement decisions.
