The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has uncovered and dismantled a large-scale methamphetamine production facility concealed within a forest in Oyo State, describing the operation as one of the most significant synthetic drug manufacturing sites discovered in Nigeria.
The illegal laboratory, located in Tapa Village, Ibarapa North Local Government Area, was allegedly operated by an international drug cartel involving both foreign and local collaborators.

During a coordinated raid, NDLEA operatives arrested five suspects, including a 56-year-old Mexican national believed to be the technical specialist behind the drug production process. Four Nigerian suspects were also taken into custody for their alleged roles in the operation.
According to the agency, the facility was heavily fortified and equipped with sophisticated machinery capable of producing methamphetamine on an industrial scale.
Investigators recovered large quantities of controlled chemicals, industrial catalysts, and raw materials commonly used in the manufacture of synthetic drugs. Several drums containing chemical substances in different stages of processing were also discovered during the operation.

Among the equipment seized were industrial reactors, distillation units, condensers, mixers, and drying machines used in the production and processing of methamphetamine.
Preliminary laboratory analysis conducted on samples recovered from the site confirmed the presence of methamphetamine and other chemical compounds associated with its production.
NDLEA officials noted that the discovery comes shortly after another major illicit drug laboratory was dismantled in the South-West, raising concerns about attempts by drug trafficking networks to establish large-scale synthetic drug production hubs in the region.

The agency described the arrest of the foreign suspect as evidence of the growing international dimension of drug trafficking operations in Nigeria. It also highlighted the success of intelligence-led operations in disrupting organised criminal networks involved in the manufacture and distribution of illicit substances.
Authorities said all exhibits recovered from the site have been secured and documented as part of preparations for prosecution.

Methamphetamine is a highly addictive synthetic stimulant known for its severe effects on physical and mental health. Health experts warn that prolonged use can lead to serious cardiovascular complications, psychological disorders, and long-term damage to the brain and other vital organs.
NDLEA reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying efforts against drug trafficking and illegal drug production across the country.
