TURAKI-LED PDP DEMANDS FORENSIC AUDIT OF ‘GBAJAGATE’, QUESTIONS PRESIDENTIAL OVERSIGHT

The Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for an independent forensic investigation into the controversy surrounding the alleged activities of the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC), describing the situation as a reflection of serious institutional weaknesses within the Federal Government.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the opposition party said the allegations involving the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, and the Presidency’s response have raised significant concerns about transparency, accountability and the effectiveness of presidential oversight.

The controversy centres on claims made by Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi Matthew, who identified himself as the Director-General of the PFIPC and alleged that financial inducements were linked to his appointment and the council’s operations.

The Presidency, through presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, has rejected the allegations, insisting that both the PFIPC and the Presidential Economic Advisory Council (PEAC) are non-existent government bodies. It also accused Adeyemi of forging official documents and falsely presenting himself as a government appointee.

Reacting to the development, the PDP argued that the Presidency’s explanation has intensified public concern over the integrity of government institutions.

According to the party, if Adeyemi indeed operated as an impostor, it would expose major failures in government oversight by raising questions about how he allegedly secured office accommodation, accessed budgetary provisions, maintained official accounts and interacted with government agencies without detection.

The party maintained that such a development would reveal serious deficiencies in internal controls, verification procedures and administrative supervision across key public institutions.

It further argued that if allegations of financial inducements influencing appointments prove to be true, the matter would represent another major corruption scandal requiring a comprehensive investigation and accountability.

The PDP stated that regardless of which account is eventually established, the controversy has undermined public confidence and highlighted what it described as recurring governance failures under the current administration.

The opposition party urged the Federal Government to immediately commission an independent forensic investigation, suspend officials directly connected to the matter while investigations continue, implement institutional reforms and provide Nigerians with a full explanation of the events.

It specifically called on President Bola Tinubu to appoint a reputable international forensic firm to investigate the allegations, reorganise structures within the Presidency where necessary and publicly address the concerns raised by the controversy.

According to the PDP, only a transparent and credible investigation can restore public trust in government institutions and strengthen accountability ahead of the 2027 general elections.
