PFIPC CONTROVERSY DEEPENS AS PRESIDENCY, OAGF CLASH OVER CBN ACCOUNT

Conflicting statements from the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) and the Presidency have raised fresh questions over the status of a Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) account allegedly linked to the controversial Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC).

Earlier this month, the Presidency stated that police investigations found that Adeniyi Adeyemi, who claims to be the Director-General of the PFIPC, allegedly used forged documents to deceive the OAGF into facilitating the opening of a CBN account for the organisation.

The Presidency also alleged that investigators uncovered 34 bank accounts linked to Adeyemi, including several reportedly opened in the names of non-existent agencies.

However, the OAGF has disputed claims that the PFIPC operated a functional account with the CBN.

According to the agency’s Director of Public Relations, Bawa Mokwa, although an application to open a CBN account was initiated, the process was never completed because the required documentation, including the names of authorised account signatories, was not submitted.

Mokwa maintained that the account was never activated and therefore did not become operational. He reaffirmed this position when contacted for further clarification.

The controversy surrounding the PFIPC has continued to generate public attention after reports indicated that the body operated with features similar to a government agency despite questions over its legal status. It reportedly received a budget allocation for 2026, maintained an office within the Federal Secretariat, and recruited staff members.

Previous reports also indicated that the organisation was granted approval to recruit about 300 employees in 2025.

The matter gained national attention after the Presidency publicly denied the existence of the PFIPC under the current administration. The Office of the Chief of Staff to the President also denied appointing Adeniyi Adeyemi to lead the organisation.

In response, Adeyemi rejected the Presidency’s position and called for an independent investigation into the controversy. He questioned how the PFIPC was allocated funds in the 2026 budget if the agency was not officially recognised by the Federal Government.
