Argentina’s football federation has come under investigation in the United States over allegations of possible financial misconduct, even as the country’s national team continues its campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Reports indicate that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is examining financial transactions involving the Argentine Football Association (AFA), focusing on the movement of more than $300 million through banks and companies in the United States.
According to the reports, investigators have questioned AFA President Claudio Tapia about the federation’s international commercial agreements and the structure of financial transactions linked to U.S.-based institutions. Authorities are reportedly assessing whether any of the transactions may have violated U.S. laws by concealing the origin or intended use of funds.
At this stage, no criminal charges have been filed against the AFA, its officials or any individuals in either the United States or Argentina.
The investigation has reportedly expanded beyond Argentina, with U.S. authorities examining a network of financial transfers involving shell companies, offshore accounts and corporate entities believed to have handled significant sums of money.
Investigative reports have highlighted several transactions now under scrutiny, including payments reportedly made to relatives of a spiritual adviser who accompanied Argentina’s national team during major tournaments, as well as millions of dollars transferred to a U.S.-registered company linked to an individual whose financial background has raised questions.
Journalists following the investigation say the amount of money being examined could exceed $260 million, with the total expected to increase as investigators continue their work.
Despite the ongoing probe, authorities have not announced any formal charges, and the investigation remains active as Argentina pursues another FIFA World Cup title.
