REJECT GIFTS, SHUN EXTRAVAGANCE, CJN TELLS NEWLY APPOINTED JUDGES

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has urged newly appointed judges of lower courts to maintain strict ethical standards by avoiding unsolicited gifts and unnecessary public celebrations that could expose them to future complaints.

Kekere-Ekun gave the warning during the opening of an induction programme for newly appointed judges held in Abuja, where she charged them to uphold the integrity of the judiciary and protect public confidence in the justice system.

The CJN, who was represented at the event by the Administrator of the National Judicial Institute (NJI), Justice Babatunde Adejumo, stressed the need for judges to ensure swift resolution of cases, noting that timely justice delivery is essential to maintaining the trust of litigants.

She advised the new judges to build effective working relationships with court officials, including registrars and exhibit keepers, while also developing a strong understanding of court rules and procedures.

Kekere-Ekun cautioned the judges against accepting gifts that were not officially requested, explaining that such gestures could later result in petitions or allegations of misconduct. She also advised them to avoid excessive celebrations that may create opportunities for inappropriate expectations.

She further encouraged judges to exercise their powers responsibly, particularly the authority of contempt, which she said should only be applied when necessary and with caution.

The NJI Administrator, Justice Babatunde Adejumo, congratulated the newly appointed judges and reminded them of their responsibility to uphold constitutional principles, strengthen the rule of law and ensure fair administration of justice.

Adejumo noted that lower courts play a vital role in Nigeria’s judicial system by handling the majority of cases affecting citizens at the grassroots level and reducing pressure on higher courts.

He explained that the induction programme was designed to equip the new judges with knowledge of judicial ethics, courtroom management, legal procedures and the practical responsibilities of serving on the Bench.
