President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York this September, marking his return to the annual global summit after missing the previous two editions.
Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, confirmed the development after a meeting with the President at the State House in Abuja.

According to the ambassador, Tinubu will use the international forum to outline his administration’s economic reforms and highlight the progress recorded under his government.
He stated that the President’s address has been scheduled for 10:45 a.m. New York time, giving Nigerians and audiences around the world the opportunity to follow the speech live.
In addition to addressing the General Assembly, Tinubu is expected to participate in a number of high-level engagements focusing on key sectors such as energy, education and healthcare.

The meeting with the President also centred on regional security, with discussions on strengthening border protection across West Africa through closer collaboration with the United Nations.
Ambassador Ibrahim said the President remains committed to improving border security to tackle insecurity linked to porous frontiers within the region.
Tinubu last attended the UN General Assembly in 2023 after assuming office. Nigeria was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the 2024 and 2025 sessions.

The President’s participation this year is expected to provide Nigeria with another opportunity to present its economic reforms, discuss regional security challenges and renew its call for greater representation, including a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
