LAMIDO’S ENDURING POLITICAL FOOTPRINT STILL DEFINES JIGAWA’S POWER EQUATION

More than a decade after completing his tenure as Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido remains one of the state’s most discussed political figures, with his administration continuing to generate debate over its impact on governance and development.

Supporters credit Lamido with driving significant improvements in infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture, and public administration, describing his tenure as a major turning point for the state. Others acknowledge these contributions but maintain that every administration has its strengths and weaknesses and should be assessed through objective performance measures.

When Lamido assumed office in 2007, Jigawa faced challenges including inadequate infrastructure, youth unemployment, limited industrial growth, gaps in education, and poor healthcare services. His government responded with policies focused on infrastructure development, institutional reforms, agricultural growth, social services, and strengthening the civil service.

During his administration, several road projects, public buildings, and urban renewal initiatives were undertaken, with supporters arguing that they improved transportation, boosted commercial activities, and enhanced access to essential services. However, analysts note that infrastructure should also be evaluated based on long-term maintenance, sustainability, and economic impact.

Education was another major priority, with investments made in school construction, classroom rehabilitation, teacher recruitment, scholarship programmes, and support for tertiary education. While these efforts expanded educational opportunities, experts argue that long-term success should also be measured through student performance, enrolment rates, and the quality of teaching.

The administration also invested in healthcare by improving primary healthcare centres and general hospitals, particularly in rural communities. Public health experts, however, note that lasting improvements in healthcare depend on sustained investments across multiple administrations.

Recognising agriculture as the backbone of Jigawa’s economy, Lamido’s government introduced programmes aimed at supporting farmers, expanding irrigation, and improving agricultural productivity. Analysts point out that agricultural performance is influenced by several external factors, including weather conditions, market trends, security, and federal policies.

Supporters further commend the administration for strengthening public institutions, promoting civil service reforms, and improving governance structures. Many believe these institutional reforms have had lasting effects beyond physical infrastructure.

Outside state governance, Lamido has remained an influential figure in Nigerian politics through his experience as a former Minister of Foreign Affairs, governor, and senior political leader. While supporters describe him as principled and experienced, critics argue that opinions on his leadership style remain divided.

Political observers also note that successive administrations in Jigawa have governed under different economic and political realities, introducing their own development programmes while building on projects initiated by previous governments. Many argue that governance should be viewed as a continuous process rather than a competition between leaders.

Experts say the evaluation of any administration should consider factors such as infrastructure quality, economic performance, institutional development, fiscal management, transparency, accountability, and long-term policy outcomes.

As discussions about Lamido’s legacy continue, analysts believe the broader lesson is that future leaders should focus on strengthening institutions, maintaining effective policies across administrations, and using measurable indicators to evaluate governance for the benefit of the people.
