Concerns have emerged over the structural condition of the newly inaugurated Lameco Flyover in Osogbo, Osun State, after a section of the bridge reportedly subsided following heavy rainfall.
The 672-meter flyover, inaugurated by Governor Ademola Adeleke about three weeks ago, was constructed over a period that began in October 2023 and was reportedly completed in July 2026 at an estimated cost of ₦20 billion.
Residents and motorists expressed concern after noticing a depression on part of the bridge on Friday morning, prompting many commuters to seek alternative routes over safety fears.
To prevent possible accidents, operatives of the Amotekun Corps cordoned off the affected section while awaiting further assessment.
As of the time of filing this report, the Osun State Government had not released an official statement regarding the reported subsidence.
Reacting to the development, the Director-General of the Ajisope Development Initiative (ADI), Akin Adeyi, criticised the project, alleging that concerns over its quality had been raised from the early stages of construction.
According to him, warnings about the project’s execution, contract cost, and engineering standards were ignored despite repeated calls for greater scrutiny.
The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) also raised concerns about the structural integrity of the flyover, calling on professional engineering bodies to immediately investigate the project.
The party urged organisations including the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB), the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers (NICE), and the Association for Consulting Engineering in Nigeria (ACEN) to conduct an independent assessment of the bridge.
The APC further alleged that the flyover project was awarded to an unqualified contractor and claimed the latest development supported its long-standing criticisms of the project.
The opposition party also appealed to the state government to suspend the commissioning of other road and bridge projects until experts complete a comprehensive investigation, insisting that public safety should remain the top priority.
