The National Patriots has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the launch of a $3 billion Social Protection and Human Capital Development initiative, describing it as a significant demonstration that the Federal Government is now complementing difficult economic reforms with large-scale investments aimed directly at improving the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.
The President of the National Patriots, Princess Gloria Adebajo-Fraser, MFR, gave the commendation during the inauguration of the organisation’s nationwide grassroots structure, where she said the intervention reflects a deliberate transition from stabilising the nation’s economy to ensuring that the benefits of those reforms reach vulnerable citizens across the country.
According to Fraser, every major economic reform inevitably comes with temporary social costs, particularly for low-income households. She noted that while the removal of fuel subsidies, exchange-rate reforms and fiscal restructuring were necessary to restore macroeconomic stability, Nigerians equally expected practical measures that would cushion the impact on families, women, youths, senior citizens and disadvantaged communities.
She observed that the latest social investment programme represents one of the most ambitious efforts in recent years to strengthen Nigeria’s social safety net while investing in the country’s greatest asset—its people.
“The launch of this initiative demonstrates that President Tinubu’s administration is not solely focused on economic statistics and fiscal reforms. It also recognises that the true measure of national progress lies in improving the quality of life of ordinary Nigerians,” Fraser said.
She explained that human capital development remains one of the strongest indicators of long-term national prosperity, noting that countries that consistently invest in education, healthcare, nutrition, skills development and social protection record stronger economic growth, lower poverty rates and higher productivity over time.
Fraser stated that while physical infrastructure remains essential for national development, sustainable economic transformation ultimately depends on healthy, educated and economically empowered citizens.
She noted that nations such as Brazil, Indonesia, India and several emerging economies have demonstrated that well-targeted social protection programmes can substantially reduce poverty, expand opportunities and stimulate local economic activity when implemented transparently and efficiently.
According to her, Nigeria’s current phase of economic reform requires a balanced approach that combines fiscal discipline with strategic investments in human development.
“The success of economic reforms is measured not only by improved government revenue, stronger reserves or increased investor confidence, but also by the extent to which ordinary citizens experience better living conditions, improved access to healthcare, quality education, skills acquisition and economic opportunities,” she said.
The National Patriots observed that social protection has become an essential component of modern governance across the world. From conditional cash transfers and nutritional support to youth employment initiatives and healthcare programmes, governments increasingly recognise that protecting vulnerable populations strengthens social stability and promotes inclusive economic growth.
Fraser said the newly launched programme has the potential to make a meaningful difference if implemented with transparency, accountability and rigorous monitoring.
She urged federal, state and local government institutions responsible for implementation to ensure that every component of the programme reaches its intended beneficiaries without political interference or bureaucratic bottlenecks.
