Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has revealed plans to shut down the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Konduga as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to resettle people affected by insurgency.
The announcement comes after the successful closure of the Bama IDP camp, previously the largest displacement camp outside Maiduguri, while arrangements are also underway to close the camp in Gwoza.
During a visit to the Konduga camp, Governor Zulum assured displaced residents that the resettlement programme would be voluntary, emphasizing that no one would be forced to return to their communities.
He explained that the government would continue consultations with the displaced persons before the exercise begins in approximately four months to ensure the process is carried out with dignity and respect.
According to the governor, many of the displaced persons have already expressed their willingness to return home, adding that the government remains committed to supporting them throughout the transition.
As part of the visit, Zulum inspected the ongoing construction of resettlement houses in Amarwa, a new housing project designed to accommodate displaced families leaving the camps.
The governor also visited Maiwa in Mafa Local Government Area, where additional housing units are under construction alongside essential public facilities such as a primary healthcare centre, water supply systems and other basic infrastructure to support returning residents.
He was accompanied on the inspection by the member representing Konduga/Mafa Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Engr. Bukar Talba; the member representing Konduga Constituency in the Borno State House of Assembly, Hon. Bukar Modu; the Commissioner for Local Government and Emirate Affairs, Sugun Mai Mele, as well as other government officials.
