The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has foiled two attempts to smuggle cocaine out of Nigeria after discovering the drugs hidden inside a traditional wooden mortar and a specially modified backpack.
The agency disclosed this in a statement shared on Sunday by its Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi.
According to the NDLEA, one of the seized consignments was concealed inside a traditional wooden mortar commonly used for pounding yam and grains. The package was being prepared for shipment to China.
In a separate operation, officers also intercepted cocaine concealed in the false bottom of a backpack hidden among lace materials. The shipment was destined for Italy.
Babafemi said the seizures highlight the increasingly creative methods being used by drug traffickers to evade security checks.
He added that the agency remains committed to detecting and stopping illicit drug shipments, regardless of the concealment methods used by smugglers.
