The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has clarified that there was no fire at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, despite reports that caused concern among passengers and airport users.
In an update issued by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, the authority explained that the smoke seen inside the terminal was caused by the activation of the airport’s FM-200 fire suppression system, not by an actual fire.
According to the statement, preliminary findings showed that the fire suppression system discharged automatically, creating the smoke that led to the alarm.
FAAN said the reason the system was triggered is still being investigated.
The authority also confirmed that normal operations have resumed at the terminal.
“Preliminary findings indicate that there was no fire at the terminal. The smoke observed resulted from the discharge of the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system,” the statement said.
It added that investigations are ongoing to determine what caused the system to activate.
FAAN thanked passengers, airlines and other airport users for their patience and cooperation, while reassuring the public of its commitment to maintaining safety and security across all airport operations.
