Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has met with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and other prominent Southwest political leaders at his residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State, in a meeting that has sparked fresh political discussions ahead of the 2027 general election.
The closed-door meeting, held on Sunday, was attended by former Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, and former Osun State Governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola.
Makinde later confirmed the visit in a post on his official social media pages, saying the discussions focused on national issues and the future of the country.
“Earlier today, we visited Baba, His Excellency Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, in Abeokuta. Our discussions centred on important national issues in view of the upcoming general election,” Makinde wrote.
He also thanked the former president for his guidance and counsel during what he described as a critical period for Nigeria.
Although details of the private meeting were not made public, the gathering comes amid increasing political consultations and realignments ahead of the 2027 polls.
The meeting has drawn attention because of the influence of the individuals involved, particularly as political actors continue to strategise and build alliances across party lines.
Makinde, who is expected to play a major role in the 2027 presidential race, remains one of the leading political figures from the Southwest. President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), also from the region, is widely expected to seek re-election.
Obasanjo, who has remained an influential voice in Nigerian politics since leaving office, has often held meetings with political leaders during election seasons. Such engagements usually attract public interest due to his experience and influence in national affairs.
The latest meeting adds to the growing series of political discussions among key figures as preparations for the 2027 general election continue to gather momentum.
