President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a new salary structure for members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with increases ranging from 30 to 80 per cent depending on rank.
The new salary package will take effect from September 1 and follows recent remarks by the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), who disclosed that the Federal Government was working on improving the welfare of military personnel.
Under the approved structure, officers above the rank of Colonel will receive a 30 per cent salary increase. Personnel from the rank of Colonel to Warrant Officer will get a 50 per cent pay rise, while soldiers from the rank of Private to Staff Sergeant will enjoy the highest increase of 80 per cent.
The salary review will increase the Armed Forces’ annual wage bill from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion.
Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who announced the approval on Tuesday, said the salary adjustment reflects the Tinubu administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel in recognition of their sacrifices in defending the country.
