The Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has denied reports claiming he endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
In a statement released on Tuesday by his media team, the Sultan described the reports circulating on social media as false, misleading and a deliberate attempt to drag the Sultanate into partisan politics.
The statement, signed by Bashir Adefaka, stressed that the Sultan, as a father figure to all Nigerians, would not publicly or privately endorse any presidential candidate before the 2027 general elections.
According to the statement, the reports falsely alleged that the Sultan had called on Nigerians to support President Tinubu’s re-election bid.
“Our simple response is that it is not possible for the Sultan, as the father of all, to make such a statement, either publicly or in any other forum,” the statement said.
The Sultan’s media team also reaffirmed that the Sultanate is a non-partisan institution committed to serving all Nigerians, regardless of their political affiliation.
It explained that while the Sultan regularly receives politicians, government officials and members of the public for prayers, guidance and advice, such meetings should never be interpreted as political endorsements.
The statement added that the Sultan remains committed to promoting peace, national unity and religious harmony, rather than engaging in partisan politics.
The media office urged Nigerians to disregard any report linking the Sultan to the campaign of any political party or candidate ahead of the 2027 elections.
It also warned media organisations and social media users against spreading false information capable of misleading the public or dragging respected traditional and religious institutions into political controversies.
The Sultan’s office reiterated that His Eminence remains focused on fostering peaceful coexistence and national stability while continuing to serve as a father to all Nigerians, irrespective of political differences.
