Benue-Kogi-Enugu Highway to be completed by February 2028 — FG
The Federal Government has said the construction of the Benue-Kogi-Enugu Highway is expected to be completed by February 2028.
Mukaila Danladi, the Federal Controller of Works in Benue State, disclosed this on Friday during an inspection of the project with journalists and members of the presidential media team.
The 250-kilometre highway is designed to improve connectivity between Nigeria’s North-Central and South-East regions.
Danladi explained that the project had been divided into five sections to facilitate construction, with Sections One, Two and Three located in Benue State, while Sections Four and Five fall within Enugu State.
He attributed the current slow pace of work partly to the rainy season, which has affected some construction activities.
“Some activities cannot be carried out during the rainy season. That notwithstanding, we are still working. A lot of hydraulic structures are ongoing along the alignment,” he said.
Tijani Olalekan, a representative of China Harbour Construction Company, the contractor handling the project, also confirmed that the highway is scheduled for completion in February 2028.
According to him, the project is a dual carriageway traversing four states.
He said about 86 kilometres of binder course had so far been laid on both sides of the road, while work was also progressing on hydraulic structures.
Olalekan explained that some earthworks had been affected by the rainy season but assured that construction remained ongoing.
“The completion period is the 48th month. So that means February 1, 2028,” he said.
The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who also inspected the project, expressed satisfaction with the quality of work so far.
Onanuga said the road had already reduced travel time between Makurdi and Otukpo, noting that a journey that previously took about three hours could now be completed in roughly one and a half hours.
He commended the project and expressed optimism that the highway would remain durable when completed.
“If they do this all the way down to Enugu State, I think it will be a road that will last very long,” Onanuga said.
He described the project as commendable, saying it deserved recognition for improving road infrastructure and connectivity across different parts of the country.
