The Senate has explained that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) was left out of the proposed state police arrangement because it does not have a governor or a State House of Assembly.
The Senate said the FCT is still directly controlled by the Federal Government, unlike Nigeria’s 36 states, which have their own governors and Houses of Assembly.
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, Yemi Adaramodu, explained this on Friday while speaking with Saturday PUNCH about questions surrounding the exclusion of the FCT from the proposed constitutional framework for state police.
According to Adaramodu, the FCT has a different administrative structure from the states. He explained that the territory is managed by a minister who is part of the Federal Executive Council (FEC).
He also noted that the National Assembly has legislative authority over the FCT, unlike the states, where legislative powers are exercised by State Houses of Assembly.
Adaramodu said the FCT’s administration operates under the Federal Government and receives its directives through the Federal Executive Council.
In his words, “The FCT issue is different. It is under the Federal Government. Again, the FCT does not have a governor. It is run by a minister who subscribes to the Federal Executive Council.”
